Pedram Khavarzamini (tonbak) is considered to be one of the most prominent tonbak players from the new generation of Persian classical music. Pedram's unique style keeps a traditional base whilst adding virtuosic modern patterns, creating active rhythms and new sounds rooted in tradition.
After five years of study with master Bahman Rajabi, he began performing and touring with Rajabi, duets for tonbak. He was a frequent concert performer and recording artist. As a director of Varashan tonbak ensemble, member of Aftab Ensemble, and alongside Kayhan Kalhor and Ali Akbar Moradi, among others, he toured across Iran and Europe.
After meeting Greek music virtuoso Ross Daly in Germany, Pedram developed a deep musical relationship with Ross, and moved to Greece, where he became and has been a member of the Labyrinth music group for over 10 years. There, he met and performed with some of the most popular artists of World music including Habil Aliev, Mohamad Rahim Khushnawaz, Dhruba Gosh, and many more,always bringing his musical sensitivity and ability to suit every kind of music. He has also collaborated with great Perisan music artists including Dariush Talaei, Hamid Motobassem, Hossein Alizadeh, Siamak Aghaei, Hamid Khabazi, Parissa, Dastan Ensemble, and many more, and has performed on some of the most prestigious stages around the world.
"Yaad Baad", a collaboration with Siamak Aghaei, Salar Aghili, and Homayoun Shajarian in memory of late Ostad Meshkatian is one of the most popular traditional Iranian music Albums.
As a teacher, Pedram is deeply experienced, and highly sought after. He has helped in the writing and publications of master Rajabi's tonbak method, and has collected and co-edited a publication of master Eftetah's tonbak method. He emphasizes a deep rhythmic understanding and fluid technical principles. He gives workshops in Tehran and worldwide regularly.
His highly anticipated collection of tonbak compositions is due to be published by Mahoor institute in the coming year.
